I've been teaching yoga for 5 years & practicing for 12. I teach yoga with a very strong awareness of anatomy & how different your body is from everyone else's in a yoga pose. My training in yoga & anatomy is with Paul & Suzee Grilley & students of the Grilleys; their focus is fundamentally on understanding how the variations in your bones & muscles can affect what you feel in a yoga pose.
In 2007, I was burned out & in need of a life overhaul. A friend of a friend brought me to my first yoga class, Bikram yoga; I didn't know what had hit me but I knew I was on to something. Sweating through the next months, I got my focus back, learned to trust myself again & felt so much better than I ever knew was possible.
When I teach you yoga it is all about why you are doing the pose, what the pose is doing for you & how you are feeling.
I don't care what it looks like & I don't care how flexible you are.
In my yoga class, you are just making shapes to do something good for yourself. If you are doing that, then you are doing it right.
It really doesn't matter how flexible or fit you are to feel the benefits, what matters is you move & work with what you've got. You can learn how to feel the incredible intelligence of your own body. I teach you to move & use your body so that you can experience for yourself the benefits of yoga.
Yoga is a great & safe way to get out of a sedentary lifestyle, get moving & using your body in the way it was designed to move. Your body is unique; so unique that how you need to move to feel the stretching & opening can be very different from the person beside you.
I continue to train with teachers who focus on the anatomy, energy & mind body relationship of yoga.
I've have been blessed to have had the opportunity to practise with such dedicated teachers as Peter Sanson in New Zealand, Kirsten Berg & Mitchell Gold in Bali, Luke Jordan from Northern Ireland, Dace Osleja in Brussels & Petra Visser in Prague. Their spirit & passion are my inspiration.
